Psychiatrists have suggested the creation of a national database to hinder persons who have been involuntarily psychiatrically hospitalized from buying guns. The database would only include dates of admission and would be checked before any gun sales.

Let us tenderly and kindly cherish, therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write.

I see this as being a great idea as long as there isn't any fallout concerning insurance companies. That would be a pretty big problem

While patient confidentiality is important, I think the establishment of this database could only positively affect the safety and well-being of the nation.

This sounds like a good idea however, if a psychiatrist determines that a patient's disorder is in remission, can the database be updated to adapt to a person's current psychiatric status?

There should have been a database such as this years ago! Something like this can help with the gun control problem we've been having recently in the US and hopefully can limit the number of "accidents".

I was completely taken aback that there was no database, having one is definitely the best way to handle it for the future

With the debate surrounding gun control so prevalent in recent news, this use of a database in this way is definitely a potential compromise.

This would be a great database and would improve safety in and around communities. This is a great initiative that will surely protect many people and would keep guns from those who should not own one.

Aren't medical records required to be private by law? I wonder how this database will work with that being the case.

This may be a great idea to form some sort of compromise on gun control, but medical records are considered by many to be the most private information. Very interesting to see how this will play out

This sounds like a great way to keep people who shouldn't own a gun from buying one. I'm surprised there is not a database for this already.
